Boy, What A Week It Was For Trump's Lies

New steel plants! Savage gangs! Illegal voting! And other things that are not happening like the president says they are.

...Strap in, folks. Here are 11 things the president of the United States said this week that are just not true.

There are people watching on giant TVs outside his Tampa rally because it’s so popular!

There were no TVs or large screens stationed outside, the Tampa Bay Times reported, although some people couldn’t get in.

He’s the most popular Republican president ever!

Trump repeated a favorite claim of his in a tweet and again at his Tampa rally, where he said he was “the most popular person in the history of the Republican Party,” including Abraham Lincoln.

According to multiple news outlets, Trump beats only Gerald Ford among modern Republican presidents. Polling didn’t exist in Lincoln’s time; Gallup began polling in 1935.

He arrived 15 minutes early to his meeting with Queen Elizabeth!

The president slammed the “fake, fake, disgusting news” media for accurately reporting the fact that he was more than 10 minutes late to the meeting with Britain’s reigning monarch, as video of the event showed and many news outlets reported. The world even saw the 92-year-old queen look at her watch as she stood waiting for Trump’s car to approach.

He chatted with The New York Times publisher about the paper’s fake news!

The president posted a tweet about the off-the-record meeting that suggested he and Publisher A.G. Sulzberger “spent much time talking about the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, ‘Enemy of the People.’”

Sulzberger wrote a statement describing a vastly different meeting, one in which he spent time explaining to the president how his divisive language might cause real harm to journalists around the world.

“I told him that although the phrase ‘fake news’ is untrue and harmful, I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists ‘the enemy of the people.’ I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence,” Sulzberger wrote.

U.S. Steel Corp. is opening seven new plants!

He told his audience Tuesday that six plants were coming and upped that number to seven on Thursday.

The company has made no such announcement. A spokeswoman told The Associated Press that any plans to open new plants would be announced on the company’s website.

The Russia investigation is a hoax!

OK, he says this a lot.

“We’re being hindered by the Russia hoax. It’s a hoax, OK?” Trump said in Pennsylvania.

But just hours earlier, top national security officials told reporters at a news conference that Russia’s U.S. election meddling is indeed real.

“Russia attempted to interfere with the last election,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said Thursday, stressing that it is a threat “we need to take extremely seriously and to tackle and respond to with fierce determination and focus.”

Russia is “very unhappy” that he is president!

The president once again made this untrue assertion at his Thursday rally. Russian President Vladimir Putin explicitly told reporters that he wanted Trump to win the 2016 election at a news conference the two leaders gave after their Helsinki summit last month.

“Savage gangs” are “occupying our country”!

“Every day, the brave men and women of ICE are liberating communities and towns from savage gangs, like MS-13, that are occupying our country like another nation would,” Trump said in defense of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at his Tampa rally.

Although MS-13 is extremely violent and has a presence in some coastal cities, there is no evidence to support that claim, despite how often the president makes it.

Democrats are trying to give illegal immigrants the right to vote!

This does not appear to be happening across the country, although non-citizens were recently approved to vote in San Francisco’s school board elections.

“In this country, the only time you don’t need [I.D], in many cases, is when you want to vote for a president, when you want to vote for a senator, when you want to vote for a governor or a congressman,” the president claimed at his rally in Tampa this week. “It’s crazy. It’s crazy. But we are turning it around.”

It is explicitly illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections.

The terrorist who killed several people in an October attack in Manhattan brought “22 relatives” into the country!

“He came in through chain [migration], and he has 22 relatives here. They came in because he was here,” Trump said Thursday of the truck driver who killed eight people in Lower Manhattan last October.

Trump has made this claim in the past. The New York Times explained it is not possible because, as a green card holder, the Uzbek truck driver would not have been allowed to sponsor any extended relatives ― just spouses and unmarried children. The man has one wife, and his three children were born in the United States.

His administration passed the biggest tax cuts in history!

“We passed the biggest tax cuts and reform in American history. Biggest cuts in history,” Trump said in Tampa. Experts say the bill was not the biggest in U.S. history, although he would be correct if he said it was “the biggest corporate tax cut.”

...or as Bart would say “so far nobody can point to a single lie he’s told”

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

That's not what Obama did, that's your biased misrepresentation of what he did.

As a matter of fact, it was Trump that just gave the Mullahs a free pass to develop the nuclear bomb by tearing up the agreement to not do so and replacing it with nothing.

Iran, of course is a Russian ally and Trump may have been merely following his instructions (next on the list after breaking up NATO).

Rick Gates testifies that he committed crimes with ex-boss Paul Manafort

Reuters

Rick Gates, a longtime business associate of U.S. President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, on Monday testified that he helped Manafort file false tax returns and hide his foreign bank accounts.

Gates is the government's star witness in its case against Manafort, who is accused of bank and tax fraud.

Gates, who also served on Trump's campaign, pleaded guilty in February and agreed to co-operate with prosecutors under a deal that could lead to a reduced sentence. Taking the stand on the trial's fifth day, Gates admitted to helping Manafort doctor financial statements, hide foreign income and cheat on his taxes.

He said he was aware Manafort was acting as an unregistered foreign agent in lobbying for Ukraine. He said he engaged in the wrongdoing at Manafort's direction.

"At Mr. Manafort's request we did not disclose foreign bank accounts," Gates told the jury in federal court in Alexandria, Va.

...The jury has heard how Manafort made tens of millions of dollars for work with pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine. Mueller is also investigating possible coordination between Trump campaign members and Russian officials in the election campaign, but the charges against Manafort do not address that.

Cyprus accounts

Gates also testified about how wealthy Ukrainian businessmen paid Manafort millions of dollars for his political services through wire transfers to Cyprus-based accounts that were set up for Manafort by a lawyer and local politician known as "Dr. K."

"He indicated that the Ukrainian businessmen … had directed him to set up Cyprus accounts because the payments would be coming from Cyprus," Gates said when asked to explain the payment structure. Gates also testified that both he and Manafort had control over the foreign accounts, as well as Manafort's business associate Konstantin Kilimnik.

Prosecutors turn to Manafort taxes, unreported bank accounts
Kilimnik is a Russian-Ukrainian political consultant who was indicted in June on charges stemming from the Mueller probe. In court filings, Mueller has accused Kilimnik of having ties to Russian intelligence services, an allegation he has denied.

Gates testified that Manafort told him to report overseas income as loans to lower Manafort's taxable income, supporting the testimony of his accountant.

"When income came into the company, Mr. Manafort directed whether it would be treated as income … or loans," Gates said.

The jury heard testimony on Friday and Monday from accountant Cynthia Laporta, who described how Manafort and Gates doctored financial statements and backdated loans....

That's the part of the law most of his supporters don't get.

If you and I plan to rob a bank, and I steal the getaway car; even if you didn't know I was going to steal the car, then you are just as guilty of stealing the car - even if we never rob the bank! We consipred and colluded to commit a crime, so anything as a result of it means we are both guilty.

Manafort acting as a go between for the Trump campaign and the Russians who hacked Hillary means the Trump campaign can be just as guilty for illegal acts committed by the Russians - even if they didn't get the contents of her email server and the data from the DNC servers.

Melania Trump's parents become citizens through 'chain migration'

Donald Trump has suggested ending most family-based
immigration, the path to citizenship the first lady’s parents used

Viktor and Amalija Knavs were sworn in as US citizens Thursday through the same path to citizenship that their son-in-law has proposed eliminating.

Melania Trump’s parents were sworn in as US citizens on Thursday, completing a legal path to citizenship that their son-in-law has suggested eliminating.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, both in their 70s, took the citizenship oath at a private ceremony in New York City. The Slovenian immigrants, a former car dealer and textile factory worker, had been living in the US as permanent residents.

The Knavses slipped in and out of a side entrance at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Department of Homeland Security police. Some workers inside didn’t know what was going on. The couple said little, other than Viktor telling a reporter “thank you” when asked how they felt about becoming Americans.

The Knavses’ lawyer said they had “travailed a wonderful journey”.

Lawyer Michael Wildes said the Knavses applied for citizenship on their own and didn’t get any special treatment. He confirmed that the first lady sponsored their green cards. Her husband, Donald Trump, has proposed ending most family-based immigration, which he refers to as “chain migration”.

Trump’s grandfather arrived in US from Germany to join sister in 1885
Expert says Trump operating from a position of ‘racist ignorance’
Donald Trump, his vice-president and some of their closest political allies are all products of the so-called “chain migration” that Trump says brings “truly evil” people to the US, according to historical records.

The president and other Republicans have in recent months stoked fears about immigrants to America bringing their relatives into the country behind them, supposedly flooding the US with unskilled workers.

“Some people come in, and they bring their whole family with them, who can be truly evil,” Trump said in a Tweet last November. “NOT ACCEPTABLE!” He has promised to overhaul America’s system of visas for foreign relatives of US citizens or permanent residents, restricting the permits to spouses and young children.

Trump’s anger about the system was heightened by the discovery that Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi man behind a botched bombing of a New York subway station last month, had entered the US on a visa for family members.

Professor Mae Ngai, a specialist in immigration history at Columbia University, said Trump operated from a position of “racist ignorance” and was attempting to suppress a phenomenon that helped build generations of American families.

“It’s inherent to the process of migration itself,” Ngai said in an email. “It’s a natural part of the human condition – to want to move to better one’s condition, and to want to be with one’s family.”

Like millions of other Americans, Trump owes his existence to ancestors on both sides of his family having been allowed to travel from Europe to join relatives who had already settled in the US.

In October 1885, Trump’s grandfather, Friedrich Trump, arrived in Manhattan as a “gangly 16-year-old boy” fleeing poverty and military service in Germany to live with his sister Katherine, according to Gwenda Blair’s book The Trumps: Three Generations of Builders and a Presidential Candidate.

“Friedrich Trump was not going to be alone,” Blair writes. “His oldest sister had immigrated to New York a year earlier, at 23. There she joined her fiancé, a shipping clerk from Kallstadt … He had come to America after two older cousins set up a wine business in New York City.” Another Trump sister, Louise, later followed her siblings from Germany to the US.

Friedrich, who worked as a barber, became a US citizen in 1892. A decade later, he briefly returned to Germany, married Elizabeth Christ, and then brought her back to the US to live with him. Their son, Fred, married Mary Macleod, who gave birth to Donald in 1946.

Macleod had immigrated to New York in 1930 from Scotland. “Unskilled and unemployed, she lived with her married sister in Astoria, Queens,” according to Blair’s book. Ngai noted that under Trump’s plan to ban visas for residents’ siblings, “if his mother were coming to the US today, she’d be excluded”.

‘Are you a racist?’ Trump questioned over ‘shithole’ comments – video
Vice-president Mike Pence, who this week echoed Trump by promising in an interview “we’re going to end chain migration”, is also a descendant of family-based migration to the US from Europe.

In April 1923, Pence’s grandfather, Richard Cawley, arrived in New York at the age of 20 with little money, having fled war-torn Ireland. He would join an uncle and an older brother, who had paid for his passage to the US, according to records obtained by the New York Times.

Crawley then moved to Chicago, where he worked as a streetcar driver for the city transit authority and married Mary Maloney, a Chicago native whose parents had both emigrated to the US from County Clare in Ireland.

In an anecdote Pence tells during speeches to minority groups, he recalls his great-grandmother walking his grandfather to the top of a hill, gazing out west and telling him that he needed to leave for the US.

“You need to go to America because there’s a future there for you,” Pence quotes her as saying.

The ironic contrast between Trump’s venomous rhetoric on migrants and the backgrounds of him and his team was noted on Thursday by Jennifer Mendelsohn, an author and genealogy enthusiast.

Mendselsohn responded to a tweet about chain migration from Dan Scavino, Trump’s director of social media, by highlighting a string of Scavino’s ancestors who appeared to have emigrated to the US in succession during the early 1900s.

Perhaps the most vocal proponent of Trump’s attack on “chain migration” is Stephen Miller, a senior White House adviser, who previously worked for Jeff Sessions, Trump’s attorney general and a fellow immigration hardliner.

Miller’s own family chain was traced by the Jewish Journal back to his great-great-grandfather, Wolf Glosser, who reportedly fled Belarus and landed in New York aboard the German ship SS Motke in January 1903....

Okay, it IS hypocritical for Melania to sponsor her parents while her husband supports legislation to outlaw chain migration.

But for the moment it IS the law so why should Melania's parents not take advantage of it while everyone else does?

I think they should be allowed in to become citizens because it's not that big a deal. And the same citizenship should also be given the any Mexican or Central American who joined the US military and served with honour in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to his wife, children, and parents too. It's the fair thing to do for someone who put his life on the line for America, or at least it was viewed that way back in the old days when America still believed in fairness.
